Tour Description

With this Grand Canyon bus tour frontier history comes alive during a guided horseback tour of Eldorado Canyon, an area located south of Lake Mead near the Colorado River, which was known for its lawlessness, ghosts, and rich gold mines.

Adventurous sightseers travel the same trails followed by mule-driven ore wagons, which is surrounded by remarkable scenic mountains, rock formations, and forests of chollo cactus.  In its heyday, the area’s primary residents were gold miners, greedy speculators, renegade Indians, and Civil War deserters.

During this Grand Canyon sightseeing tour, you may be lucky enough to encounter the Canyon’s abundant desert wildlife, such as Big Horn Sheep, mustangs, and foxes. Cameras and binoculars are recommended.  Visitors, too, are often surprised by the area’s magnificent Spring wildflower displays, a gift from Mother Nature when conditions are right.

Eldorado Canyon’s intriguing setting has landed it starring roles in two high-profile movies, “3,000 Miles to Graceland,” and “Breakdown.” Visitors taking the afternoon horseback ride have the option of taking a walking tour of the Techatticup Mine. For approximately 70 years until the mid-1940s, the mine remained one of the richest gold producers in Nevada. Visitors explore three different shafts, one of which drops down more than 900 feet. Temperatures inside the mine are a constant 70 degrees F, the one comfort afforded the hard-rock miners who laboriously chiseled by candlelight with primitive tools in their search for the precious metal. A bit of trivia: be sure to ask the guide about the ghosts referred to as the “Hell Dogs of Eldorado Canyon.”

A stop at the Old West Town affords visitors ample time to browse through the reptile exhibit and cactus garden. There are also original mining equipment and re-creations of stone buildings, which help visualize life in a rugged mining camp during the 1800s.
